Does it need an internet connection?
No. Everything, including text recognition, runs on your phone. You only need a connection for the optional cloud backup.
What is the 1 GB of cloud storage?
Optional backup and sync to your other devices, with 1 GB included in your purchase. Sign in with Google or Apple to turn it on. Until you do, nothing leaves your phone.
